After the season opener against Příbram Bobcats, Junior Knights coach Jayden Lawson remains optimistic despite the loss. In our interview, he talks about how the defence forced turnovers, what lessons the team learned from the final minutes, and how new players are adapting quickly. Lawson also shares his philosophy of building a strong culture that will shape the Junior Knights program for years to come.
Jayden, in the game against Příbram the defense allowed 81 points. How would you evaluate the performance of the defense and what do you think was the biggest factor in the result?
To start, our team only allowed 74 points. With the final 2 minutes we could have knee’d the game out. However, I opted out because there is ALWAYS opportunity to force a turnover to put our offence back on the field. Sure enough, the first play of that last drive our defence was inches away from gaining possession of a fumble to put our offence in a position to score.
Nonetheless, the defence played great. 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 interception. These are all take aways to put our offence in a position to score. Additionally, we had 3 turnover on downs, and our defence was holding the Bobcats to consistent 4th and long situations and we had 4 pass brake ups on extra point conversions.
Going into week one, our goal was not to win, the win is a ‘nice to have’ but we are in the process for changing the culture and standard of the Junior Knights to build a consistent and dominant program for years to come, and I think you already saw a glimpse of it against the Bobcats. This change does not happen overnight and will pose challenges along the way, for example, losing. The pain of failed execution affords the opportunity for growth and improvement and allows us to learn about who we are as individuals and a team so we can come back stronger. We cannot get to where we want to be this season and seasons to come without facing that type of adversity.
In the final stretch, the opponent managed to turn the score from 70:39 to 70:81. What happened on defense and where do you see room for improvement?
We started to game red hot, well prepared, and ready to fly around. However, approaching the back half of the game our team got to comfortable and complacent. We had major executional errors as well as play calling errors. This game taught us a valuable lesson that we have to play from the first whistle to the last through 4 quarters of football.
It was the first game of the season, for some, it was their first game ever. For me, I have never watched, coached or played 5v5 football before so for the players and myself there was a lot of growing pains. We have addressed mental and physical mistakes and look to build off of this going into our next match against Zlin.
How do you work with young players on understanding defensive schemes and reading the opponent’s plays correctly?
The key goal is to, Teach players what to see, what to do, and how to do it without thinking too much on the field.
- Install the Defensive Scheme and adjustments in Layers so that it is easy to digest as new and young players.
- Provide a small dictionary of core football terminology.
- Walk Through Before Full Speed – making sure everyone has a key understanding of the foundation before involving more elements.
- Teach Players to Read Their Keys and what these certain keys can tell you about what play might be coming.
- Emphasize Communication on the field from player to play to make sure everyone is on the same page.
- Repetition in Controlled Drills. Experience is everything – the more they do it and see it over an extended period of.m time the better they’ll become.
- Film Study – have another chance to watch and critique yourself from a different perspective. Watching the offence and the tendencies from a different perspective. These strengthen their understanding of football, how the offence operates, how to do their job in specific situations, and how the overall defence matches up against the overall offence.
Which aspects of the defensive game pleased you despite the result, or showed potential for the future?
Everything about our game provided strong potential for the future. We have 7 brand new players to American Football, they all played and were impact players. If you watch that game over, I bet you cannot pick those brand new players out. The new players are progressing quickly, with the help of veteran players which means we will all peak together, as a team, at the same time. When this happens, I hate to be the opponent we are up against.
This Sunday you face your second home game against Zlín Golems. What will you focus on defensively to deliver a better performance and continue improving?
The players will be hyper focused executing their job to the best of their ability through 4 full quarters of football and I will be focused on delivering a more consistent call script that compliments our defensive personnel.

Po otváracom zápase sezóny proti Příbram Bobcats zostáva tréner Junior Knights Jayden Lawson optimistický aj napriek prehre. V rozhovore hovorí o tom, ako obrana prinútila súpera k turnoverom, aké ponaučenia si tím vzal zo záverečných minút a ako rýchlo napredujú noví hráči. Lawson zároveň vysvetľuje svoju filozofiu budovania silnej kultúry, ktorá má formovať program Junior Knights na roky dopredu.
Jayden, v zápase proti Příbramu obrana inkasovala 81 bodov. Ako by si zhodnotil výkon obrany a čo podľa teba najviac ovplyvnilo výsledok?
Na začiatok – náš tím v skutočnosti inkasoval iba 74 bodov. V posledných 2 minútach sme mohli zápas dohrať „na kolenách“. Rozhodol som sa to však nespraviť, pretože vždy je šanca vynútiť si turnover a dostať našu ofenzívu späť na ihrisko. A skutočne, hneď pri prvej akcii toho posledného drajvu bola naša obrana len kúsok od získania lopty po fumble, čo by našu ofenzívu postavilo do pozície na skórovanie.
Napriek tomu hrala obrana výborne – 2 vynútené fumble, 1 fumble recovery a 1 interception. To všetko sú momenty, ktoré dostávajú našu ofenzívu do šance skórovať. K tomu sme mali 3 turnover on downs, obrana tlačila Bobcats do neustálych 4. pokusov a dlhých yardov a zabránila 4 konverziám po touchdownoch (extra point attempts).
Do prvého týždňa sme išli s cieľom, ktorý nebol primárne „vyhrať“. Víťazstvo je príjemné, ale naším cieľom je zmeniť kultúru a štandard Junior Knights tak, aby sme vybudovali konzistentný a dominantný program na roky dopredu. Myslím, že proti Bobcats ste už mohli vidieť jeho prvé náznaky. Takáto zmena sa však nedeje zo dňa na deň a prináša so sebou aj výzvy – napríklad prehry. Bolesť z neúspešnej realizácie nám dáva príležitosť na rast a zlepšenie, umožňuje spoznať samých seba ako jednotlivcov aj ako tím a vrátiť sa silnejší. Bez toho, aby sme čelili takejto nepriazni osudu, sa nemôžeme dostať tam, kam chceme – v tejto sezóne ani v tých ďalších.
V závere zápasu dokázal súper otočiť skóre zo 70:39 na 70:81. Čo sa stalo v obrane a kde vidíš priestor na zlepšenie?
Zápas sme začali vo veľkom tempe, dobre pripravení a motivovaní. No v druhej polovici sa tím dostal do zóny komfortu a uspokojil sa. Spravili sme veľké chyby v realizácii, ale aj v play-calling-u. Tento zápas nás naučil cennú lekciu – musíme hrať od prvého do posledného hvizdu, celé 4 štvrtiny.
Bol to prvý zápas sezóny a pre niektorých vôbec prvý zápas v živote. Pre mňa osobne to bolo prvýkrát, čo som videl, koučoval alebo hral 5v5 futbal. Takže pre hráčov aj pre mňa to prinieslo mnoho chýb, ktoré patrí k rastu. Mentálne aj fyzické chyby sme si už rozobrali a chceme na nich stavať pred ďalším zápasom proti Zlínu.
Ako pracuješ s mladými hráčmi na tom, aby správne chápali defenzívne schémy a vedeli čítať súperove akcie?
Kľúčovým cieľom je naučiť hráčov, čo si na ihrisku všímať, čo robiť a ako to robiť – bez toho, aby museli priveľa rozmýšľať.
- Zavádzať obrannú schému a jej úpravy postupne, po vrstvách, aby to bolo pre nových hráčov ľahko pochopiteľné.
- Poskytnúť malý slovník základných futbalových pojmov.
- Najprv prejsť akcie v pomalej rýchlosti, až potom prejsť na plné tempo – aby mali všetci pevný základ.
- Učiť hráčov čítať kľúčové indikátory – čo im konkrétne indikátory prezrádzajú o tom, aká hra môže prísť.
- Zdôrazňovať komunikáciu medzi hráčmi na ihrisku, aby boli všetci na rovnakej vlne.
- Opakovanie v kontrolovaných drilloch – skúsenosti sú všetko. Čím viac to hráči robia a vidia počas dlhšieho obdobia, tým lepší budú.
- Štúdium videa – možnosť pozrieť sa na seba z iného uhla a zároveň študovať súperovu ofenzívu a jej návyky. To posilňuje porozumenie futbalu, toho, ako funguje ofenzíva, čo má kto robiť v konkrétnych situáciách a ako sa celá obrana prispôsobuje ofenzíve.
Ktoré aspekty defenzívnej hry ťa potešili napriek výsledku alebo ukázali potenciál do budúcnosti?
Všetko na našej hre ukázalo silný potenciál do budúcna. Máme 7 úplne nových hráčov amerického futbalu, všetci v zápase hrali a boli dôležití hráči. Ak si ten zápas pozriete znova, stavím sa, že by ste ich nevedeli rozoznať. Noví hráči napredujú rýchlo, s pomocou veteránov, čo znamená, že ako tím dosiahneme vrchol spolu, v rovnakom čase. A keď sa to stane, nechcel by som byť tímom, proti ktorému nastúpime.
V nedeľu vás čaká druhý domáci zápas proti Zlín Golems. Na čo sa budeš v obrane zameriavať, aby ste podali lepší výkon a ďalej sa zlepšovali?
Hráči sa budú maximálne sústrediť na čo najlepšie plnenie svojich úloh počas všetkých 4 štvrtín a ja sa zameriam na konzistentnejší play-calling, ktorý bude lepšie vyhovovať našim defenzívnym hráčom.
